Cat Adoptions

Cat Adoption Fees

  • Unaltered cat adoptions are $45
  • Altered cat adoptions are $60

Step 1: Browse Our Free Roaming Cat Room

Take the time to consider the cat's temperament, energy level, and specific needs to ensure a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship for both of you. This process can take a while so we recommend that you arrive at least one hour before the Shelter's closing time. You might also consider visiting outside our peak hours (3 pm - 4 pm on weekdays and 11 am - Noon on Saturdays).

The Miami County Animal Shelter works with local veterinarians to attempt to have every cat spayed/neutered before adoption. Unfortunately, this is not always possible so if your adopted cat is intact at the time of adoption they must be spayed or neutered within 45 days of adoption.

Cat Clinic: Anyone adopting a cat from our Shelter receives top priority for our low-cost spay/neuter cat clinics. The fee for the clinic is $90 for females and $60 for males and includes a rabies vaccination.

Our cats are adopted on a first-come, first-served basis from approved applications.

Step 2: Submit Your Application

Applications are only accepted in person at the Miami County Animal Shelter. Applications must be received before doing a meet-and-greet with any of our adoptable cats. You can also print and complete your application at home to save time during your visit to the Shelter.

We are passionate about finding the right home for our pets so each application is carefully reviewed for compliance with our guidelines. Due to processing times, we may be unable to review your application on the same day it is submitted.

As part of our review process, we will:

  • Conduct a background check: To protect our animals, applications will not be approved if anyone in the household has been involved in a violent crime against a person or animal.
  • Confirm your housing status: You don't have to be a homeowner to qualify for adoption. However, we must speak with the landlord/homeowner to confirm that pets are permitted where you live and that there are no weight limitations or breed restrictions. Confirming homeownership through the Miami County Auditor's website is a standard part of our review process.
  • Ask about other cats in your home: We will contact your current veterinarian to confirm the health records of any other cats in your household. We cannot approve an adoption application for an opposite-sex, intact cat if you own an unaltered cat.

Step 3: Welcome Home Your New Feline Companion

You've found the perfect fit and now it's time to bring home your new companion!

All cat adoptions include:

  • The first round of FVRV-FCV-FPV VACCINE (feline viral rhinotracheitis, feline calicivirus, and feline panleukopenia)
  • Revolution (treats for fleas and ticks)
  • Strongid (dewormer)
  • Coupon for a free health examination with a Miami County veterinarian

You will need the following to finalize the adoption:

  • Photo ID
  • Payment in the form of cash, check, or credit/debit card (there is a 2.7% processing fee for cards)

Partnering with Miami County Animal Shelter

While our top priority is matching our animals with a permanent home, there are times when we will partner with local animal rescues. If you are an animal rescue interested in one of our cats, please email the shelter to begin the process.

FAQs

  • Does my dog have to wear his/her license tag?
First of all, it is the law. Also, wearing the license tag is the quickest way for your dog to be returned to you if he/she becomes lost.
  • Do you accept credit/debit cards as payment?
Yes, the Miami County Animal Shelter accepts credit/debit cards (there is a 2.7% processing fee for credit/debit cards), cash, and checks with photo identification. No starter checks, please.
  • How soon are dogs available for adoption after they arrive at the animal shelter?
Dogs wearing current license tags must be held for 14 days. Dogs without license tags must be held 3 business days. After that time period the dog may be available for adoption and they are kept for as long as it takes and we have room.
