Dog Licenses

Licensing Information

Licenses are required for all dogs over the age of three months. Per the Ohio Revised Code (ORC 955.01). The application for registration must be filed by every person who owns, keeps, or harbors a dog within the first 30 days of ownership or between December 1 and January 31.

Your dog's license is what helps us get them back home if they happen to venture away from home. Be sure to update your phone number with the Shelter so that we will be able to contact you quickly.

Dog licenses are available online, at the Auditor’s office, and at the Miami County Animal Shelter. Dog licenses are also available at selected outposts from December 1 through January 31.

If you have found a stray dog with a Miami County dog license, please call the Shelter (937-332-6919) during business hours. You may contact the Miami County Dispatch Center using the non-emergency number (937-440-9911) after regular business hours.

FAQs

  • Does my dog have to wear his/her license tag?
First of all, it is the law. Also, wearing the license tag is the quickest way for your dog to be returned to you if he/she becomes lost.
  • Do you accept credit/debit cards as payment?
Yes, the Miami County Animal Shelter accepts credit/debit cards (there is a 2.7% processing fee for credit/debit cards), cash, and checks with photo identification. No starter checks, please.
  • How soon are dogs available for adoption after they arrive at the animal shelter?
Dogs wearing current license tags must be held for 14 days. Dogs without license tags must be held 3 business days. After that time period the dog may be available for adoption and they are kept for as long as it takes and we have room.
