Highway Department Duties

The Highway Department undertakes many road & bridge related projects throughout the year. Among the duties performed by department staff are those listed below.

ROAD MAINTENANCE

  • Road widening
  • Snow and ice control
  • Pavement resurfacing and crack sealing
  • Edgeline and centerline painting on County/Township highways
  • Roadside mowing and spraying of herbicides
  • Roadside drainage improvements
  • Road safety improvements (pavement widening, ditch setbacks, berm improvements, etc.)
  • Fabrication and erection of highway signs on County/Township roads
  • Maintenance of all highway construction equipment
  • Guardrail erection and repair
  • Response to emergency weather conditions

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE

  • Repair and rehabilitation of bridge decks, railing, and walls
  • Replacement of bridges and culverts
  • Repair and erection of approach guardrail
  • Spot-painting on bridge structures
  • Fabrication of bridge beams, box culverts, and catch basins



Tax Map Information

The Tax Map Department creates and maintains records and maps to formally document important property information affecting residents, business concerns, and governmental entities in the county. Duties performed by the staff include those listed below.

  • Drawing and maintaining tax maps or property maps of approximately 46,000 parcels of land within the county for use by the Miami County Auditor's office and the public.
  • Approving and recording land and lot surveys and plat surveys on existing tax maps.
  • Checking and approving deed descriptions.
  • Assisting the public with property or deed related issues.
  • Providing prints of tax maps, surveys, and other property related maps of record.
  • Assisting other local government offices and school districts by providing computer aided drafting drawings.
  • Reviewing, researching, and providing information for updating Miami County's highway map



Engineering Duties

The Engineering Department is actively involved in many projects and initiatives related to on-going construction, maintenance, and repair of the county highway infrastructure. Duties performed by department staff include those listed below.

  • Preparing bridge and road engineering plans and specifications for in-house construction and maintenance projects.
  • Reviewing and approving plans and specifications for contracted highway construction and maintenance projects.
  • Securing Federal and State funding sources to subsidize local road and bridge construction and maintenance projects.
  • Assisting various Miami County political subdivisions with highway and drainage projects.
  • Preparing plans for drainage improvement projects.
  • Performing traffic studies for safety improvement projects and speed studies for establishing speed limits.
  • Inspecting county-maintained bridges on an annual basis.
  • Issuing various roadway related permits.
  • Issuing address numbers within the unincorporated areas of the county.
  • Maintaining extensive ditch records on each ditch in Miami County.
  • Acting as the engineering advisor for the Trustees of the twelve Townships within Miami County.
  • Reviewing and approving construction plans for housing subdivisions and industrial sites within the unincorporated areas of the County.
  • Performing field review of proposed building sites.
