Volunteer

Volunteer - picture of a Beagle retrieving a toyWant to make a difference for the dogs and cats at our shelter? Whether you're interested in walking animals, lending a hand at adoption events, or supporting us in other ways, we’d love to have you on our team!

Just fill out our Volunteer Application, and someone from our staff will reach out to walk you through the next steps.

Volunteers must be at least 15 years old. Those ages 15 - 17 will need a parent or guardian to sign a waiver and must be accompanied by an adult while volunteering.

Special Note About Court-Ordered Community Service

If you are seeking to complete court-ordered community service hours, please complete our Court-Ordered Community Service Application instead of the standard Volunteer Application. A member of our team will review your submission and contact you to discuss available opportunities, expectations, and next steps.

Please note that not all offenses are eligible for placement at our shelter. All applicants will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Foster

Foster families play a vital role in supporting our shelter by giving animals the focused care and attention they need.

While fostering can be deeply rewarding, it also comes with challenges, which is why we’re especially thankful for those who stay committed to providing the patient, compassionate care our animals need during this transitional time.

As a foster parent, you’ll play an important role in preparing your foster animal for adoption. Depending on the animal’s needs, your responsibilities may include:

  • Bringing them back to the Shelter for vaccinations or medical care
  • Helping with housebreaking and crate training
  • Making them available for meet-and-greets with potential adopters
  • Exposing them to new people, other pets, and different environments to help with socialization

Just like with our adoptions, we take great care in matching foster families with the right animals. This helps ensure a positive experience for both the foster parent and the pet. If you meet the following requirements, we’d love to talk with you more about opening your home to one of our animals in need:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
Fostering requires a mature level of responsibility and decision-making. From managing vet visits to socializing the animal, it’s important that the primary caregiver be an adult.
  • All dogs and cats currently living in your home must be up to date on vaccinations.
  • This helps protect both your pets and the foster animal from preventable diseases and ensures a safe, healthy environment for everyone.
  • You must either own your home or have your landlord’s approval to foster animals.
  • This prevents potential conflicts or housing disruptions that could lead to the animal being returned unexpectedly. If you rent, written permission from your landlord confirming pet approval is usually sufficient.
  • You must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Foster animals need to be returned to the shelter for vaccinations, medical care, and adoption meet-and-greets. Having a driver’s license ensures you’re able to meet these needs in a timely and consistent manner.

If you're thinking about becoming an MCAS Foster Parent, we’d love to hear from you! Getting started is simple - simply complete our Foster Application, and someone from our team will be in touch to guide you through the next steps.

FAQs

  • Does my dog have to wear his/her license tag?
First of all, it is the law. Also, wearing the license tag is the quickest way for your dog to be returned to you if he/she becomes lost.
  • Do you accept credit/debit cards as payment?
Yes, the Miami County Animal Shelter accepts credit/debit cards (there is a 2.7% processing fee for credit/debit cards), cash, and checks with photo identification. No starter checks, please.
  • How soon are dogs available for adoption after they arrive at the animal shelter?
Dogs wearing current license tags must be held for 14 days. Dogs without license tags must be held 3 business days. After that time period the dog may be available for adoption and they are kept for as long as it takes and we have room.
